Canada Catholics ‘ordain’ women

Women “priests”Sunday marked an interesting day up in Canada: Canadian Catholics have “ordained women.” Five women and a married man, all Roman Catholics, have been ordained as priests and deacons by a female Catholic bishop.

The Vatican has already said that they will not acknowledge their ordinations nor the group who performed the ordinations: Roman Catholic Womenpriests. The “presiding bishop” was Bishop Patricia Fresen, one of the most well-known figures. It’s interesting to note, however, that she is not listed on the Roman Catholic Womenpriests website.

Three women were called to the priesthood by Bishop Patricia Fresen at an ordination ceremony at West Hill United Church in Scarborough on Sunday afternoon. Two women and one married man were called to the diaconate, and will eventually become Catholic priests.

  3. Actually, I don’t believe any Catholics, Canadian or otherwise, ordained any women priests. Perhaps some former catholics have ordered some clerical garb off the Internet and played at ordination, but no sacrament was conferred

    Also, if these women feel no need for obediance to the Church then they should not expect any obediance from among those they minister.

  4. Timothy, I must agree with you. No ordination took place in Canada. In visiting your blog, I assume you are Catholic. I am a Lutheran, and therefore only hold to two Sacraments, Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Ordination is not a Sacrament according to the Lutheran Church. There was no ordination. Putting the best construction on it (8th Commandment), these women dressed up and decided to “play church.”

    The Vatican is very much in the right by not acknowledging Roman Catholic Womenpriests, their “ordinations” nor the subsequent “ordinations” which have taken place since. Paul’s Epistles to Timothy and Titus clearly outline the qualifications and requirements of an elder in the Church, namely, to be the husband of but one wife. I would like to know how a women, any women, could be the husband of but one wife.

  5. This is a social experiment. The secular world says God’s Word means nothing if it makes you feel bad. When the world sees the Roman Catholic church – or even the LC-MS – they see the churches relegating women to less supportive roles when it comes to ministry. To them, that is wrong and must be corrected, even it means rejecting the doctrine on which the church stands on.

    Too bad those secularists don’t see how we elevate women in the church. They may not be priests or pastors, but what congregation could stand without women and their tremendous leadership roles that they take!!

    In the end, it comes down to this: If you don’t want to be a Roman Catholic and accept their doctrine, become something else.

  6. If all of you are so sure of the role of women in Jesus’ Church, why does the bible state that he showed Himself FIRST to Mary Magdelene after the resurrection? She is also called the “apostle to the apostles.” And women were ordained from the 2nd century to the 6th (yes, in the Roman Catholic Church).

    The Danube Seven (7 women ordained in 2002) were ordained by a valid bishop. A bishop NEVER loses his/her powers to ordain (as stated in the Roman Catholic Church); some of those seven were later made bishops by 3 male bishops. There is a valid line between these woman bishops going back to the early Church and it has all been documented.

    Women being priests has only been unlawful in the eyes of a male dominated Church, not in the eyes of its founder, Jesus Christ. Jesus did not discriminate against women.

  7. There is no excuse for disallowing women in all equal roles in the Catholic faith, including priesthood. Congratulations to the Canadian women, who should be acknowledged by the Vatican. In answer to the response above, Roman Catholics are often aware of the sexism, however, in the interest of keeping peace, which is the Christian way, they let their personal interests be subservient to those of the Church. This is good and in the spirit of Christ, but it does not represent just treatment and equality. This is another injustice in society that we have yet to correct, even in some small part through blogs such as these.

  8. Lisa, have you read 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus? These books outline the qualities and requirements of the office of overseer and deacon. One of them is “husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2, 12). Question: can a woman be a husband? This is not women being subservient but women following the order of creation. Man was created first, then woman. The male or husband is the head of the house and it is his responsibility to teach the faith, both to the family and to the Church at large. This is not an “injustice in society,” but this is Scripture.

    Let me ask you a question: do you believe that the Bible IS the Word of God or does it CONTAIN the Word of God? If it IS the Word of God, then that Word cannot change. If it CONTAINS the Word of God, then it is entirely up for debate and we can change it whenever we want.
